CONCEPT

This project is meant to learn about filmmaking, help you to understand the process behind the scenes. The topic depends on ourselves, but our storyboard, light setting, editing, post-production, and sound design should be as professional as we can, there are four members in our team, we had less than one month to finish this 5 mins film. I mostly focus on directing and screenwriting.

BRAINSTORM

Brainstorm is my first step, as a huge fan of Guy Ritchie and Quentin Tarantino, I want to follow their styles, and decided the genre for this film: drama and black humor. As you can see above which is my mood board.

STORYBOARD

So, based on the movie Snatch and Pulp Fiction, and follow the idea of multi-line narrative, I write the Logline: A mysterious fortune triggers a story of a professional robber, a incompetent amateur thief, a hard gangster collide with each other and intertwine in two tales of robbery and being-robbed.

SHOOTING

I and my photographer discussed a lot about camera position and light setting, we used drills, go-pros to make our action scenes look professional. For the location, we chose a pub, an old-school hotel (one of the oldest in Vancouver), which exactly follow our art direction.

POST-PRODUCT

Adobe After Effect and Premiere are the major tools we used for post-production, PR is using for editing and color grading, AE is used for special effects. The major problem that we overcome is how to make our video looks like a movie, or make it a cinematic work, we paid a lot of attention on color grading in PR, and finally turned the yellowish original video into a cinematic-like movie.
